Thai League (T1)

 

Thai League 1 (formerly known as the Thai Premier League) is the country’s top-tier professional football league.

 

Thai League 1 is contested by 18 clubs. The clubs in the league play a 2-round league format, resulting in each teams playing 34 matches per season. Thai League 1 operates on a relegation and promotion system. The 3 clubs with the lowest standings will be relegated to Thai League 2 in the following season.  

 

The league typically starts in the month of February and ends in the month of October, and sometimes in the months of November or even December. League games usually kick off in the evening or at night time.  Matches usually take place in the weekends and occasionally on wednesdays and Fridays.

Thai League 2 (T2)

 

Thai League 2 (formerly known as ‘Thai Division 1 League’ ) is the country’s second-tier professional football league.

 

The number of clubs in the league varies from season to season. As of 2018, Thai League 2 is  contested by 15 clubs. The clubs in the league play a 2-round league format, resulting in each teams playing 28 matches per season. Thai League  2 operates on a relegations and promotional system. At the end of the season, the top 3 teams on the league table will be promoted to Thai League 1, while the bottom few teams on the league table will be relegated to Thai League 3. The number of relegated teams from the league varies from season to season.

Thai League 3 (T3)

 

Thai League 3 is the country’s third-tier semi-professional football league.

 

The league was founded recently in 2017. Clubs competing in the Thai League 3 are separated into 2 groups – Lower Region and Upper Region –  based on their geographical location. The league operates on a relegation and promotion system along with Thai League 2 and Thai League 4. The club that finishes at the top of the table for each group will be promoted to Thai League 2 in the following season. A few clubs that finish at the bottom of the table for each group will be relegated to Thai League 4 in the following season.

Thai League 4 (T4)

 

Thai League 4 is the country’s fourth-tier football league.

 

Clubs competing in Thai League 4 are separated into 6 groups – Bangkok Metropolitan Region, Eastern Region, Western Region, Northern Region, North Eastern Region and Southern Region – based on their geographical location.

 

Depending on the number of teams in each region, each teams will play either 2 or 3 legs against teams in their own region in a league format.

 

Thai League 4 operates on a promotion and relegation system along with Thai League 3 and Thailand Amateur League.

 

A total of 12 teams will advance from the regional stage to a Champions League Knockout Stage. 5 teams that performs the best in the Champions League Knockout Stage will be promoted to the Thai League 3.

 

Teams that finish in the last place in the table of each regions will be relegated to the Thailand Amateur League.

Thailand Amateur League (TA)

 

The Thailand Amateur League (TA) is the lowest level of Thai football. It is separated into 12 regions based on the team’s geographical location. The league also operates on a promotion system, whereby teams can be promoted to the Thai League 4.
